Top Three Topics #1 – with not yet Christians

One of the things I loved most about study camp was the many conversations I got to have – over meals, during free time and randomly walking from one place to the next.

As I reflected on the week I think there were some common themes that emerged.

So over the next three days I am going to post about the top three conversation topics:

  • with not yet Christian students
  • with Christian students
  • which were surprisingly quiet (ie. I was expecting a lot more conversations than I had)
Firstly, not yet Christian students.

In my experience conversations I had with not yet Christian students revolved around the following three questions/issues:

  1. RELEVANCY
So what if Jesus did live and die?  What difference does that make to me?
  2. SUFFERING
How could a good God let so much bad stuff happen to me?  For many this was not so much an intellectual question but a personal one.
  3. HEAVEN & HELL
What exactly is the future of the world?  Why do I want to be with God in heaven when my friends/family are going to hell?

I’m not sure if my experience was common or unique to me and the talks I gave.

If you have been a study camp leader what do you think? Do you agree?

  2. I completely agree, so many of my conversations were about those 3 things! Particularly with the first one. I would add one on the historicity of the Bible/Jesus too, although that seemed an initial question rather than a sustained one.
    ps loving these series :)

    • I also found that about the historicity question – it was a real surprise actually that i wasn’t asked about it more.

Do you have any words of wisdom on giving a good answer to the relevancy question?
